Revelation chapter 2 opens with a message to the church in Ephesus. To the Ephesian believers this message from Christ was radical, even revolutionary. What Christ told the Ephesians then still applies to us today, and should be listened to by believers in the future. (Revelation 2:1-7)

  • Ephesus was the prominent city of the region.
  • Temple of Artemis was in Ephesus.
  • Last known city where Mary lived.
  • Many made their living making and selling pagan artifacts and religious statues.
  1. The Lord made some positive statements; Revelation 2:2-3
  • Their works, toil, and patient endurance…
  • They couldn’t bear the evil of false teachers…
  • They took up the fight for the truth of the Gospel for the sake of the name of Christ…
  1. The Lord made a Negative statement to the Ephesians; Revelation 2:4-5
  • They abandoned the love they had at first. There are 4 Greek words for love; a) storge – family affection, b) philia – friendship, c) eros – erotic love, and d) agape – unconditional love.
  1. Christ hated the Nicolaitans; Revelation 2:6
  • Who were the Nicolaitans? Acts 6:5
  • The doctrine of Compromise…
  • Christ detested (hated) compromise…
