With Christ we should expect the unexpected, especially when it comes to what it truly means to be “Born Again”!

Read Notes

They say, "A journey of a thousand miles begins with the first step." But, what if, along the way, you discover, your journey is more than a thousand miles? I started this journey to discover the true meaning of being "Born Again". I had it pretty well mapped out. I knew where I was going. But, as it is with God, I discovered some roads I wasn't expecting...

John the Baptist was on a journey with God. John had certain expectations that on his journey, if he came across the Messiah, he would be a certain way, and do certain things. Jesus was completely different than any expectation anyone had about the Messiah. (Matthew 11:7-9)

Jesus told the people that John the Baptist was more than a prophet. He was more than a voice for change. He was preparing the way for the Messiah... That was "Unexpected"... We have to be prepared for the "Unexpected", especially when we're following Christ...

When Nicodemus came to Christ, he was expecting to get answers from Him... answers that he believed Christ had, otherwise why would he have started off with, "We know you are a teacher who has come from God." (John 3:2)

In the Gospel of John, chapter 6, and verse sixty-three, Jesus said, "The Spirit is the One giving life. The flesh profits nothing. The words which I have spoken to you are spirit and are life." (John 6:63)

The Spirit gives Life, the Words of Jesus are Spirit, therefore the Words of Jesus are Life... "The Spirit is the one that gives life, the flesh is of no use."

The backdrop for John 6...

In John 6:14-15 it says that because the people saw this sign (the sign of feeding so many people with so little food) Jesus knew that they wanted to take Him by force and make Him their king.

Jesus says in verse 63 of John 6, "The Spirit is the One giving life. The flesh profits nothing. The words which I have spoken to you are spirit and are life." (John 6:63)

Some will argue because of this statement, "If the Spirit doesn't lead someone to Christ, then how can they be blamed for not believing in Him?" Let's look again at John 6:44-45;

"No one is able to come to Me unless the Father having sent Me draws him. And I will raise him (or her) up on the last day. It has been written in the prophets (Isa 54:13): 'and they shall all be taught ones of God'. Everyone having heard from the Father and having learned, comes to Me."

Is this an audible voice? In the case of Paul it was (Acts 9:1-6), but in almost every other case it's not... It's an event here, a comment over there, a circumstance in your life that causes you to take stock. It may be something traumatic (a death) or something like a birth, that causes you to consider your future...

Step 1 in the Born Again Process - The Spirit of the Father brings us to Christ...

In this first step the "Water" (which we said is the Word of God) and the "Spirit" work together to bring us to Christ... We see this in the Parable of the Sower in Luke 8...

How does this growth happen? It happens because the Word of God and Christ, is Spirit. The Word itself is Spirit... It's like when Jesus said in John 10:30, "I and the Father are one."

So, what does an well prepared heart look like? What does it mean for our heart to be "Good" ground for the "Word"? Peter gives us this answer in 1Peter 1:17-23

Step 2 in the Born Again Process - The Word (seed) is planted in our heart...

Being "Begotten from Above" is a spiritual conception that begins with the seed of the Father being placed in the hearts of believers when they have faith in the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ for our justification before the Father.

This brings us to step 3 of the "Born Again" process;

Step 3 in the Born Again Process - Redemption is our Amniotic Fluid for our protection...

We are brought to Christ by the Word and the Spirit... The Word of God plants the seed in our "Good" heart, and the conception of our new life has been initiated. Our new life needs a safe place in which to grow. That safe place is in our Redemption... Resting in our Redemption is like a baby growing in the Amniotic Fluid of a mother's womb.

Why do I say this? Let's look at the full effect of Redemption... I mean the full effect of Redemption if we live like we really believe it... This is how it works according to Peter (1Peter 1:17-23);

The "Born Again" process happens in 2 stages, just like physical birth; there is conception (when the born again life begins) and there is delivery (when the born again life is revealed to the world)... And while we are still in the spiritual womb, before our delivery into the world, we are to spend our time "Knowing" that we're Redeemed...

That's the "Unexpected" nature of the Spirit of God and His Word... I didn't expect these things, but what did I expect to find when wanted to learn the "Truth" about the meaning of being "Born Again"? What did you expect to hear?

I pray that this is all coming together for you... For the Spirit and the Word to be fruitful in our new spiritual life, our hearts must abide in the knowledge that we "ARE" Redeemed...
