In John 3:5-8 Jesus said that unless someone is “Born Again” they can’t see the Kingdom of Heaven. He said that a person must be born of the “Water” and the “Spirit” to be “Born Again”. In the last episode we discussed what Jesus meant by being born of the “Water”, and in this episode we’re going to look at what he meant by being born of the “Spirit“.

In a very real way the “Water” and the “Spirit” are the parents of everyone who is “Born Again

As Jesus told Nicodemus, this shouldn’t confuse us; John 3:7 … But it has confused us for 2,000 years…

What does it mean to be like the wind?

1. The wind blows where it wants… It’s Irrepressible…

  • Moses
  • Elijah
  • Jeremiah
  • Daniel
  • John the Baptist

2. You hear the sound of it… It’s Indisputable…

3. But you don’t know from where it comes, and where it is going… It’s Incorruptible…

Everyone who is “Born of the Spirit” is like the wind…So is everyone who is “Born of the Spirit“…

Today we say that people who are like this have “Charisma“. Charisma is a Greek word which means ’empowerment by grace‘ or ‘spirit empowered‘… It’s where the word “Charismatic” evolved from which the church today interprets to mean “Spiritual Gifts” or “Gifts of the Spirit“…

So, now we’re beginning to see some additional blurring of the lines around the meaning of “Born from Above“…

  • Born of the Spirit
  • Filled with the Spirit
  • Baptized by the Spirit
  • Receiving the Spirit
  • Gift of the Spirit

These labels have been co-mingled to represent being “Born from Above” and yet they’re all labels describe very different functions of the Spirit of God from being “Born from Above“…

In Scripture the most visible example of someone who was “Charismatic” in the Old Testament is the Prophet Elijah…

His dress and appearance were different… 2 Kings 1:7-8 Zech. 13:4

His clothing showed the world 3 things;

  • His poverty was a choice and it showed that his priorities in this life were different…
  • He was separate from the world and he denounced what the world valued…
  • He was serving a different purpose and a different God…

Elijah was an example of someone who was Born of the Spirit… he was;

  1. Unpredictable – irrepressible
  2. Undeniable – indisputable
  3. Unafraid – incorruptible

Elijah was “Born of the Spirit” but was he “Born from Above” or “Born Again“? How did this terms get co-mingled?

The 4 stages of the “Charismatic” movement;

Stage 1: The Quakers & Shakers and the “2nd Blessing”… 1835…

Stage 2: The “Era of Manifestations”… 1850 – 1900…

Stage 3: The “Charismatic Movement”… Azusa Street Revivals of 1906 – 1915…

Stage 4: The “Jesus Movement”… 1970’s * 1980’s…

My “Born Again” Story…

Are we a “New Creation” or do we “Hope” to become a “New Creation” in Christ? -25"]

Only 4 verses in the Bible use the term “Born Again”; John 3:3 & John 3:7 and 1Peter 1:3 & …

  • 40% of Adult Americans (96 mil) consider themselves to be “Born Again
  • 75% of Americans (182 mil) consider themselves to be Christians…

Nearly 100 million people in America believe they are “Born Again“, and this would have to be multiplied many times over throughout the world… Consider the impact that these 4 verses of the New Testament have on the culture of humanity… If you’re on either side of the “Born Again” issue isn’t it important to know whether these 4 verses really do support or deny the “Born Again” experience as taught today?
