In the previous 3 chapters we saw the presence of Christ in the world through the church… His interactions and words were with mankind and to mankind on a level that we can relate with…
But now, as we begin chapter 4 we’re going to see and hear things that we have no frame of reference for… We’re going to be taken into a realm that we have never known or understood, and even what little we have known we’ve rejected or forgotten… We’re now going to get a Peek Into Heaven…
The Apostle Paul tells us why it’s so difficult for us to grasp what heaven looks like in 1 Corinthians 2:9-10
Heaven is unimaginable to us… it’s incomprehensible for us… Why? Because Heaven is spiritual, and we’re wrapped up in our flesh and not God’s Spirit… Paul explains our difficulty in understanding the spiritual when he writes in 1 Corinthians 13:11-12
Let’s catch a peek at what John saw in heaven… Revelation 4:1-11;
After this (later) I looked, and behold, a door (opening, portal) standing open in heaven! And the first voice, which I had heard speaking with me like a trumpet, said, “Come up here, and I will show you what must take place after this.” At once I was in the Spirit (4 times in Revelation – 1:10, 4:2, 17:3, 21:10), and behold, a throne stood in heaven (throne mentioned 15 times in these 11 verses), with one seated on the throne. (Going back to what I discussed, where is heaven?) And he who sat there had the appearance of jasper (cloudy red) and carnelian (cloudy brownish yellow), and round the throne was a rainbow (iris) that had the appearance of an emerald (translucent green). Round the throne were twenty-four thrones, and seated on the thrones were twenty-four elders (leaders, not necessarily apostles), clothed in white garments (promised by Christ earlier), with golden crowns (victors crown not monarchs crown, also promised by Christ) on their heads.
From the throne came flashes of lightening, and rumblings, and peals of thunder, and before the throne were burning seven torches of fire, which are the seven spirits of God, and before the throne there was as it were a sea of glass, like crystal.
And round the throne, on each side of the throne, are four living creatures, full of eyes in front and behind: the first living creature like a lion (Michael – who is like God), the second living creature like an ox (Raphael – it is God who heals), the third living creature with the face of a man (Gabriel – God is my strength), and the fourth living creature like an eagle in flight (Uriel – the light of God). And the four living creatures, each of them with six wings, are full of eyes all around and within, and day and night they never cease to say,
“Holy, holy, holy, is the Lord God Almighty, Who was and is and is to come!”
And whenever the living creatures give glory and honor and thanks to him who is seated on the throne, who lives forever and ever, the twenty-four elders fall down before him who is seated on the throne and worship him who lives forever and ever.
They cast their crowns before the throne, saying,
“Worthy are you, our Lord and God, To receive glory and honor and power, For you created all things, And by your will they existed and were created.”
These songs remind us of the Gospel of John 1:1-3
Those who attack and accuse Christ today remind us of those who attacked and accused Him 2,000 years ago for the same crimes… because of His love, faith, hope, and saying He was God… This is what our world can’t allow… those who want to control humanity can’t have mankind listen to another God, because they make themselves to be gods to mankind… But Jesus is on the Throne of God, and there isn’t any other… and this will be the clash that we’ll see in the coming weeks in Revelation.
